Luxury Cognac Rémy Martin has released a super premium Cognac with a $20,000 per case price tag.

The Cognac - Louis XIII Rare Cask 43,8 – is the result of a rare discovery by Rémy Martin cellar master, Pierrette Trichet.

In 2004, Trichet found that one of the maturing casks of Louis XIII Cognac - a blend of over 1200 eaux-de-vie aged between 40 and 100 years - had risen in strength from the standard 40° to 43.8°. After watching the cask, she realised that the increased heat was creating a more intense aroma and a palate of honey, nuts and mushrooms.

This Louis XIII Rare Cask has now been released in only 786 decanters (one tierçon), as a special edition for Louis XIII collectors.

Presented in a unique carafe created by French glass-maker Baccarat, the bottle is made from rare black crystal and takes more than 20 people to produce each carafe.

Louis XIII itself has become one of the most sought-after Cognacs for a collector. Louis XIII Rare Cask editions are only released if Trichet deems a tierçon to be of a high-enough quality to warrant a separate release.

Louis XIII Rare Cask is available by special order from Suntory Australia.
