Started by publicans, who have now been joined by many more members from around the hospitality industry – the Liquor Industry Golf Club (LIGC) is growing in statue and attracting sponsorship.
With Cooper’s executive chairman Glen Cooper and Peter James, a partner in Geoff Merrill Wines, amongst those in attendance, TheShout was earlier this week invited to the latest event organised by the South Australian chapter of the LIGC at the magnificent Royal Adelaide Golf Club.
More than 60 luminaries from around the hotel and liquor industry in SA, including Peter Carey – the hall of fame South Australian footballer who is now GM of CCA in SA – and Chris Dittmar, a hotelier, commentator and former world number one squash player, played for a series of prizes sponsored by Coopers and Geoff Merrill.
A place in the SA state side that will play in the Johnnie Walker Cup inter-state series in Victoria October 24-29 also beckoned for some of the birdie gurus in the group.
Peter O'Shaughnessy has owned and run Hotel Victor in Victor Harbour for 30 years and has been the LIGC SA secretary for the past 18 years.
“This started mainly in NSW, VIC and SA some 65 years ago as just an opportunity for the publicans to get together,” O’Shaughnessy said.
“But particularly in SA we’ve got 200 members now, so it’s now expanded to include a lot of people and companies from around the hospitality and liquor industries.”
Hoshizaki Lancer’s national sales manager, Bill Cadd, attended the day and was full of praise for the club that seems to be growing every time an event is held.
“It’s a great day with good people and they always play on the top courses,” Cadd said.
“I think industry should continue to attend and support days like this.”
For the record, Michael Noble from MC Noble Building Designers in Reynalla won the A-Grade division with 36 points off a handicap of 10.
