Australians are embracing their love for the water with three island bars opening up over the 2010/11 summer period.

In Sydney, both a floating island bar – The Island – and a temporary bar on Cockatoo Island, called The Island Bar, have wowed the crowds, while Melbourne has welcomed Ponyfish Island, a floating bar located under the Yarra Pedestrian Bridge.

The floating, Julian Tobias-owned Island is pulled along by a tugboat, moored at different points in Sydney Harbour and is only accessible by water taxi.

In addition, The Cockatoo Island Bar yesterday announced a one-day bar event called Cocktail Island on Sunday March 27.

The one-day event will see some of Australia’s best bartenders showcase some of the world’s leading spirits cocktail culture and will who will give visitors an insight into cocktail trends from around the world.
