Bleasdale Vineyards from Langhorne Creek has taken home the 2019 Jimmy Watson Memorial Trphy for the best one or two-year-old red wine at the 2019 Royal Melbourne Wine Awards for its 2018 Bleasdale Wild Fig SGM.
The wine, which is 73% Shiraz, 24% Grenache and three per cent Mourvèdre, was up against over 1000 other young red wines at this year’s awards.
“Bleasdale continues to evolve in a dynamic environment, and remains as relevant as ever. As the Jimmy Watson Trophy was conceived in 1962, Bleasdale made their first table wine after 100 years of fortified winemaking,” said Senior Winemaker Paul Hotker.
“People love fresh young wines with varietal character and that’s what Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills and Bleasdale do so well.
“Everyone locally is enjoying our wines because they suit the modern Australian lifestyle. We have a diverse portfolio that suits our multicultural and fusion food culture.”
As the first Jimmy Watson in their trophy cabinet, the Bleasdale team said it is proud that their wines showcase Langhorne Creek’s ability to produce distinctive, premium wines.
Shiraz and Grenache, the hero varietals in the award-winning Wild Fig SGM, were originally grown in Langhorne Creek for fortified winemaking, but have cemented their place as first-class table wines.
