The Court of Master Sommeliers Australia has revealed the results of its Introductory and Certified Examinations held in Sydney this week.

This year’s exams saw 27 students achieve the title of Introductory Sommelier and 19 students were named as Certified Sommelier. In addition, the 2018 Sydney Riedel Certified Sommelier Dux was awarded to Salvatore Persico of the Rockpool Dining Group.

As well as welcoming students from states and territories throughout Australia, this year’s Court of Master Sommeliers’ Sydney programme hosted students from China, Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand. And as Franck Moreau MS, revealed the students were also mentored by Master Sommeliers from around the world.

“This year the students were tutored by six Master Sommeliers originating from Australia, New Zealand, France, Romania and the United States. This breadth of global experience and outlook really enriches the learning experience for the students. It demonstrates that certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers offers a highly prestigious and globally recognised qualification,” Moreau said.

Fellow MS, Ben Hasko, said he was impressed with the Sydney students and that he’s looking forward to seeing the Court’s fellowship increase.

“The candidates for the Sydney course showed enthusiasm for the industry and furthering their wine education. Arriving at the course prepared for the examinations continues to be a determining factor for those that are successful on the day. We look forward to seeing the CMS community grow in the future,” Hasko said.

The first Court of Master Sommelier courses were held in Australia in 2008. Since then in Australia over 1000 students have participated in the examinations resulting in: 673 Introductory Sommelier graduates, 304 Certified Sommelier graduates, 32 Advanced Level Sommeliers and just five who have attained the title of Master Sommelier.
