Giacomo Franceschi of Merivale’s Charlie Parker was crowned the winner of the Inaugural Australia Gin Cocktail Cup, in front of a full house at the Barber Shop in Sydney this week.
The Cup aims to showcase the best bartenders in the NSW liquor industry, and is an adjunct to the Australian Gin Awards and Gin Palooza – both of which will be held in March 2019.
Entrants were invited to create an Australian gin-based cocktail – using a gin from the selection of the Sydney Gin Palooza’s distillers – along with six complimentary ingredients. These were then judged by a panel chosen by Competition Chairman Mikey Enright and comprising Jason Crawley, Andy Penny and Harriet Leigh.
Enright announced the winning cocktail, Deep Sea. The winning tipple featured Manly Spirit Gin, homemade lemon tincture, and to finish, moss infused with vodka, distilled and sprayed around the cocktail glass.
After announcing the winner, Enright said: “What a great line up of judges, and finalists! It was a really tough call for the judges to make – the gin cocktails have been next level. Congratulations to all involved.”
Franceschi has won a Fever-Tree-sponsored, three day trip for two to Tasmania to visit notable distilleries as well as a day trip to MONA.
The winning cocktail will be served as a welcome drink for all guests at the Australian Gin Awards Trophy Presentation Banquet next year, held at Manjit’s on Thursday 7 March 2019.
The winning recipe: Deep Sea by Giacomo.
60ml Manly Spirit Gin. 20ml single Vineyard Thomas Hunter Valley Semillon infused with sea asparagus; 6 dashes of homemade lemon tincture; 3 dashes homemade sea celery cordial; Moss infused with vodka then distilled and sprayed around the cocktail glass. Garnished with one almond dropped into the cocktail.
