The Dan Murphy’s store on Darley Road in Leichhardt is no longer under threat of demolition after WestConnex changed its plans for tunnelling sites.
Last year the New South Wales roads authority said that it would be using the site of the Dan Murphy’s for a midpoint tunnelling access, but following a review of potential construction sites, the contractor LSB Joint Venture, has decided it requires fewer than initially thought.
“In positive news for the local community, delivery improvements mean sites near Haberfield Public School are no longer required for tunnelling. The Parramatta Road sites (Muirs) at Ashfield and Haberfield will instead be used for lower impact activities such as site offices, worker amenities, parking and material storage. These improvements also mean the Darley Road site is no longer required,” a WestConnex spokesperson said.
“The existing New M4 tunnelling construction site at Northcote Street, Haberfield, will continue to be used as a tunnelling construction site, pending Department of Planning approval,” the spokesperson said.
Endeavour Drinks Group has welcomed the news, with Andrew Wilsmore, the group’s Head of Risk and Reputation, telling TheShout: “Dan Murphy’s has been warmly embraced and welcomed as part of the Leichhardt community. We welcome this decision that allows us to continue to serve our loyal customers.”
Community group, Leichhardt Against WestConnex, also welcomed the decision to abandon the Darley Road site, described it as “a win” for local residents.
