Penfolds this week launched its 2012 Bin Release, which marks the 50th anniversary of the acclaimed Bin 389.

The 2009 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz marks the 50th consecutive release of the wine, which Penfolds chief winemaker, Peter Gago, has described as one of the building blocks of Penfolds’ reputation.

”Through thick and thin, across all vintages, Bin 389 always delivers – benefiting from over half a century of practice,” Gago said.

“This is certainly a solid Bin 389 – Cabernet and Shiraz indistinguishable in their contribution.”

Bin 389 was first made in 1960 and quickly earned a reputation as being of similar quality to its Grange counterpart yet significantly more affordable.

In addition to the Bin 389, tomorrow’s release will also see the launch of the first two Bins from the outstanding 2010 vintage – the 2010 Penfolds Bin 138 Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mouvèdre and the 2010 Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz.

Gago said that the 2010 vintage is shaping up to be one of the best Penfolds vintages of the decade, particularly for wines made with Barossa Valley fruit.

The 2012 Penfolds Bin Release spans three vintages.
