Fiji Water has become the first bottled water company to go carbon negative.

As of 2008, the production and sale of each bottle of Fiji Water will result in a reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by 120 per cent of the bottle’s carbon footprint.

The remaining carbon emissions will be lessened through a variety of forest carbon and renewable energy offset projects. These carbon offsets will exceed the company’s total CO2 emissions by 20 per cent, thereby resulting in a negative carbon offset.

Fiji Water general manager Australia and New Zealand, Michael White, said the move was an important step toward allowing consumers to make environmentally responsible purchasing decisions.

“We hope that companies in our industry and beyond will provide comparable lifecycle carbon footprints for their products, so that we can work together to address the issue of climate change,” he said.

Fiji Water expects to achieve a reduction of over 20,000 tonnes of C02 emissions in 2008.
