Poole’s Rock Wines and Sydney’s internationally renowned Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras are proud to announce a significant partnership – the appointment of leading Australian wine brand Cockfighter’s Ghost as exclusive wine sponsor of this pivotal gay pride celebration.

This year’s Mardi Gras Festival (19 February – 6 March) comprises over 100 arts events and will showcase the popular Cockfighter’s Ghost varietal wine portfolio at key events within the Festival, commencing with the opening Fair Day (21 February) at Victoria Park, Chippendale when 70,000 people are expected for a relaxing fun-filled giant picnic party.

Mardi Gras is an iconic Sydney occasion, a vibrant two-week gay and lesbian cultural festival with great resonance for the gay community.

‘Cockfighter’s Ghost has been a long-time supporter of cornerstone arts events, and has grown in scale to enable this major commitment to Mardi Gras,’ commented Mike Grehan, Chief Executive, Poole’s Rock Wines. ‘It is an alliance offering considerable synergies and undoubtedly one that will mean many more wine lovers including interstate and international visitors will discover the legend of Cockfighter’s Ghost.’

Named after an early explorer’s horse called Cockfighter, reputedly drowned while crossing the Wollombi Brook in the Hunter Valley, the popular Cockfighter’s Ghost brand was established in 1994 and under proprietor David Clarke’s guidance has previously supported other prominent Sydney creative festivals including the Sydney Writers’ Festival and Tropfest.

Cockfighter’s Ghost wines will be featured at a number of major Mardi Gras occasions including the VIP Viewing Area at Middle Bar, Taylor Square for the big Parade, the Parade Carnival after-party (27 February) and the ultra-glamorous Harbour Party at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair on Sunday 28 February.

‘We put enormous value on our exclusive wine partnership with the popular Cockfighter’s Ghost brand,’ said New Mardi Gras CEO Michael Rolik. ‘It is an ongoing association that will contribute significantly to our organisation and delivery of various Festival events. It’s hard to imagine a better wine match than Cockfighter’s Ghost!’

The strikingly packaged Cockfighter’s Ghost portfolio comprises 11 single varietal wines from Australia’s finest wine regions – Cockfighter’s Ghost Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, Verdelho, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Unwooded Chardonnay, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are available from fine wine stockists nationally and the Poole’s Rock Wines Cellar Door in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley.
