Vanguard Luxury Brands is proud to announce another new brand to its stable of premium spirits and liqueurs. Calle 23 is a new highland tequila created by French biochemist Sophie Decobecq.

Calle 23 came onto Vanguard’s radar at Tales of the Cocktail last July, when Sophie Decobecq met with renowned expat Kiwi bartender Mitchel Bushell (Corner House in Sydney).  Mitch was very impressed with the brand and brought it to the attention of James France who was equally impressed.

“One of our biggest challenges is to select brands that will work in this market and with our customer base.  Of the myriad brands which come our way, it’s very rare to find a brand that we believe will truly make our customers happy. Calle 23 is such a brand and we are honored to be importing it”, commented James France from Vanguard.

Calle 23 is unique for various reasons:

  • Each expression (blanco, reposado, añejo) is fermented separately and with different combinations of yeasts used.  “This is an unusual practice which reflects the care given to this brand by its creator”, says France.  “Generally other tequilas simply take the blanco, then rest or age it to create their reposados and añejos.”
  • The bottles are designed to be bartender-friendly.
  • Calle 23 is priced competitively which belies its top ratings in Simon Difford’s Class magazine
  • Sophie infuses her own personality and sense of humour into the marketing with slogans like ‘Tequila makes you smarter’, ‘Tequila drives a Cadillac’, and ‘Tequila is Jesus’ choice’.  T-shirts and stickers are now available with these messages and more.
